Johnston's material aesthetic is conceptually based in an exploration of constructed and often contradictory societal value systems, be these purposeful or due to psychological defense mechanisms such as desensitization. For eg, straws are employed as a medium to convey observations of intentional ignorance of consumption of single-use items.
Transferred shadows extend beyond the physical to represent the metaphysical and what the artist "sees" beyond what is physically present. Born and educated in Johannesburg South Africa. Johnston now lives in Cape Town and works between the two cities.
