Theona is an artist and printmaker who lives and works in the North West. She completed her BA Fine arts degree in 1999 with distiction from the University of South Africa. In 2005 she obtained an Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts from UNISA. Theona works in a range of media including printmaking, drawing, painting, and mixed media. She enjoys experimenting with different printing techniques like relief printing, collagraphs and etching. She finds working with printed images and combining them with hand drawn images or other mixed media gives her more scope to introduce more layers of meaning into her work, especially when working with topics such as memory or loss. Her work deals with the themes of place and the temporality of existence. In exploring the passing of time and the fragility of life, she searches for traces and forgotten memories. Her current works is about the destruction, vandalism or removal of certain statues and buildings, either by intent or natural disaster. She finds iconoclasm in the hands of the masses to be dangerous. The duality of public opinion on who should be seen as heroes or villains, intrigues her.
