Thuli is a Johannesburg-based visual artist and printmaker. She studied Visual Arts at Funda Art Centre in 2015, and then enrolled for a printmaking programme at Artist Proof Studio in 2016. After graduating, she did her internship at the studio’s education unit, assisting as a printmaking facilitator. Thuli has been involved in various mural and printmaking projects and printmaking demonstrations. Since 2017, she has been part of several exhibitions, which include the Turbine and Joburg Art Fairs.
She is skilled in the printmaking techniques of monotype, relief, intaglio, silkscreen and photolithography. Her preferred mediums are silkscreen and linocut. She says “I love how these two techniques allow me to create bold, graphic and colourful details in my prints. They are also ideal for printing on different materials”. In her work she explores and celebrates African heritage by using patterns that derive from different cultural groups, creating shapes that are a metaphor for new landscapes free from political and historical constraints.
