Artist Bio – Vas Putter
Putter’s
exposure to printmaking began at university where she majored in History of Art
(with distinction) with a year of focussed Printmaking. The studio’s
magnificent antique etching press left an imprint on her, until her return to
printmaking years later. Putter says: “Through a personal journey of numbness
and touch, the creative process is helping me find my way home to healing”.
A
nomadic heritage led to a fascination with the diaspora of peoples and the
displacement of artefacts and traditions.
An unapologetic gatherer, drawing inspiration from
cultural objects and stories, Putter narrates her feelings at that moment in
time and space. The narrative of nostalgia changes constantly, and so too, does
her style. Her work, an ongoing expression of historical and contemporary
influences, at times, unpack pressing humanitarian and environmental global
issues.
Currently
rediscovering lino printing, exploring mixed-media and mark-making with
discarded objects, allows for the infusion of her painting and assemblage art.
